Easter Events of Semana Santa (Holy Week) in Valencia, Spain

This is a big day in Easter celebrations. Two big events occur. First, Jesus' entry to Jerusalem will be remembered in the morning with large processions which will see every single Brotherhood on the streets. Secondly, the Easter cermonies are finally truly underway with the sacred imagenes beginning to be transferred from their churches to the homes of the Brotherhoods.

The Palm Processions

The Palm processions are more light-hearted and joyful than the rest of the Easter, apart from the Easter Sunday: the Palm Sunday is the only celebration that isn't about Jesus' death. Happy people, lots of palm leaves and music, images of Jesus entering Jerusalem on a donkey. It is the busiest and most colourful morning before the Easter itself. All of the Brotherhoods will take to the streets roughly at the same time, but in 4 separate processions:

The Translations

The focal point, the heart of every procession of Semana Santa in Valencia is the imagen - a sculpture of a biblical scene that is carried on the shoulders of the believers. During the year they rest in churches or in the Museum of Semana Santa Marinera. On Palm Sunday, however, they start to be ceremoniously transferred to the homes of the Brotherhoods, so that they can be used in the processions. This ceremony is called a translado. Some translados will occur this Sunday, and some after.
