Mercado de Colon - the avant-guard Colon Market in Valencia, Spain

Mercado de Colon is another market shown off by Valencia. A gorgeous elaborate structure, spacious modernity, sort of simplified a-la-Valencia Gaudi, with a nave shooting into the sky and the colourful decorations depicting Valencian country life with Valencian ceramics. The architecture is so interesting it is suprising that the market was built in 1914, it is quite avant-guarde for those time. It is no good as a market, however - just a small line of over-priced souvenir shops. However, if you are into expensive souvenirs, shopping here will definitely give you quality - the wines and meats are of top sorts and so are the ceramics. If you are short for time it is probably not worth going out of your way since it only takes a few minutes to see and there is nothing else around it, but it is well placed on your way if you are going to eat or party in Canovas.
