Reales Atarazanas (Drassanes)
If
you find yourself in the Port area, the Royal Shipyards are a very short
walk away. Reales Atarazanas (also known as Drassanes in Valenciano) is
the oldest surviving structure of the Valencia's port, built in the Middle
Ages for construction and repair of ships. As such, it is a very impressive,
huge Late Gothic complex with characteristic sky-high arches. It currently
houses modern art exhibitions.
History: the Shipyards were built in 1338 at
the dawn of Valencia's maritime ambitions. They assumed their present
look in 1500, after a reconstruction. During the War of Succession in
XVIII century, Philip V made the Shipyards his headquarters. After the
war, they became a depository for salt.
